Amazed by Science Festival celebrates another successful year

This year’s Amazed by Science Festival was a big success with local kids. Children attended events all over Cheshire during half term week (27th May- 4th June).

Essar were the headline sponsor of this year’s festival, this year with other local sponsors including Urenco, Siemens, National Nuclear Laboratory and Waters.

A packed programme of science, technology, engineering and maths events took place at venues across the county including Tatton Park, Catalyst Science Discovery Centre, Chester Zoo, Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, Norton Priory Museum & Gardens, Anderton Boat Lift and Lion Salt Works. Free events were held at Warrington Golden Square Shopping Centre, Crewe Lifestyle Centre, Chester City Centre (town hall square), Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, Ellesmere Port Sports Village and Ellesmere Port Arcades Shopping Centre.

Children took part in a variety of activities across the county. Those visiting the Essar stalls in Ellesmere Port had the opportunity to power scalextric cars with pedal power, as well as learning how to recycle water, make mini motors, and create home-made lava lamps. Employees were on hand to explain the activities, and how they relate to processes inside the Stanlow Refinery.

Ian Cotton, Head of Communications at Essar Stanlow said: “This year’s Amazed by Science festival was a huge success and we were delighted to sponsor the event. Lots of local children took part in fun activities across Cheshire and we hope it has inspired the next generation of scientists.”

Katrina Michel, Chief Executive at Marketing Cheshire, commented: “It was a great year for the fourth Amazed by Science festival, which aims to inspire a love of science in children and celebrate Cheshire’s science and innovation heritage. Huge thanks to all the sponsors and venues that took part and hosted such an excellent and exciting range of events.”
